Legendary hardcore punk band Black Flag are reportedly working on new music, marking what could become the group’s first fresh material in more than a decade. According to recent reports, the band has been writing and recording with its newest lineup as it begins a new chapter under founding guitarist Greg Ginn.
The current incarnation of the band features vocalist Max Zanelly, bassist David Rodriguez, and drummer Bryce Weston alongside Ginn. The lineup was revealed in 2025 and represents a generational shift for the long-running group, with the new members significantly younger than the band’s founder. Zanelly also made history as the first female vocalist in the band’s nearly five-decade history.
In statements shared by the band, the musicians confirmed that they have already been spending time in rehearsal spaces and studios developing new songs. The group described the process as writing, jamming, and experimenting with fresh ideas, suggesting that a new release could eventually follow if the material continues to develop.
If completed, the recordings would mark the band’s first new studio output since the 2013 album What The…. That release ended a 28-year gap between studio albums, arriving decades after the band’s classic 1980s era that helped shape the hardcore punk movement.
Formed in 1976 in Hermosa Beach, California, Black Flag became one of the most influential acts in early American hardcore punk. The band’s relentless touring, DIY ethos, and landmark releases helped establish the underground punk touring circuit and inspired generations of independent musicians.
While no official release date or album announcement has been confirmed yet, the band’s recent studio activity indicates that new Black Flag music could be on the horizon for the first time in years.
